Feel overwhelmed and discouraged when you shop for clothes?
Nothing fits the way it used to.
Avoid shopping because It’s exhausting and frustrating?
Do you end up frantically shopping when you need something for a special event?
Worried you look washed out and old?
Clothes Shopping Dread
I used to dread shopping.
Until I discovered a new energy-saving method of shopping.
Is it challenging to find flattering clothes?
Is there a war inside your head?
Need to feel comfortable in your clothes
But want to look “up to date.”
Before I got trained as an Image Consultant, I used to go shopping every Saturday.
I would spend hours going in and out of stores trying on the latest styles.
I didn’t have a clue about what colors or styles flattered me.
On a merry-go-round
in and out of dressing rooms.
The result was exhaustion.
Available styles just didn’t fit or look right.
Shopping got easier when I got trained as an image consultant
Knowing how to choose flattering colors and styles
Was half the battle
But
Shopping still felt grueling.
Traditional stores have limited storage and floor space and as a result, the stock they carry has limited sizes, colors, and styles.
Traditional shopping requires too many trips to different stores and lots of walking
To hunt for just the right style, size, and color of clothing.
Even if your hunt for clothes is successful, do you end up feeling exhausted?
With an aching back or sore feet.
Steps to a less labor-intensive method of shopping
The first step
Stop reading fashion magazines!
You will only find photoshopped, super skinny models in clothes rarely available in stores.
Instead…
Subscribe to clothing catalogs.
Clothing catalogs show clothes that are available and current.
Or…
Go online and shop online clothing catalogs.
Find the star ratings and comments from other purchasers.
Find prices, colors and sizing information.
Many catalogs also have storefronts, if you are unsure of sizes.
If you dislike trying clothes on in stores you can order them sent to your home. Shipping is often free or low cost.
Many stores have free returns.
It’s best to buy one or two new pieces at a time.
There is no need to rush.
Think of online shopping as a leisurely stroll with beautiful scenery
Versus a sprint that wipes you out.
Before buying anything new
Make a list of complete outfits.
Notice what pieces are without a partner
These are the gaps that need filling in first.
Secrets of combining separates
Most women have a ‘mishmash of separates’ that don’t mix and match or only can be worn one way.
What can you do if you are not sure what your best colors are?
And you do not have the finances to hire a personal image consultant to help you determine your best styles?
When you shop in a store, the mirror can be misleading.
The mirror may be angled so you look taller and thinner than you really are.
Even at home, your mirror may lie.
Most women are overly critical when they look in the mirror.
On the other hand, your camera phone can be like a best friend who always tells the truth.
Photos are more honest.
Because it’s easier to be more objective
Looking at a photo is like looking at another person.
Your camera won’t lie.
You can look in the mirror to check for fit.
Have someone take a photo of you
To see if the item is truly flattering.
To help you mix and match
One more secret
What can you do if you don’t know what your best colors are?
Shades of your natural hair color will always be flattering,
As will the color of your eyes
And the inside of your lower lip
As well as shades of your skin color
Because our eyes automatically search for colors to be repeated.
This color repetition is calming and pleasing to our eyes and this is translated to our brain as “beauty.”
You don’t have to be model skinny, 19 years old and have perfect hair and skin to look visually pleasing.
By using catalogs, online shopping, your camera phone and repeating your natural body colors you can save yourself time, energy and frustration.
Imagine going to your closet and having 9 pieces that can mix and match to create 30 outfits.
It’s a process and won’t happen overnight.
You can do it yourself.
But this may take a long time.
The process can be quicker
if you hire a personal image consultant who has been professionally trained and has years of experience.
Joanna Nicholson, co-founder of Color 1 Associates and the woman who trained me often would say.
“When a woman wears her best colors and styles, it’s like having magic dust that transforms her from Cinderella into a Princess.”
Nancy Goldblatt, “The Wardrobe Wizard,” has lots more magic just for you.
